When is the best time to see Moraine Lake’s iconic turquoise color?

Moraine Lake is fed by snowmelt and glacial runoff and typically reaches its peak blue color from mid-to-late June through early September. Outside this window, it’s often too low or frozen.

Why is Moraine Lake such a vivid shade of blue?

The lake’s striking color is due to “rock flour” – tiny glacial rock particles suspended in the water that refract blue-green wavelengths of light.

Can I drive my own car to Moraine Lake in summer?

No. Parks Canada prohibits private vehicles year-round. Access is limited to Park shuttles, public transport, commercial operators, biking, or walking.

Lakeshore Trail & Beyond: Leads to Eiffel Lake, Sentinel Pass, Larch Valley, Wenkchemna Pass—great for longer hikes and mountain scenery
