When is the best time to see Moraine Lake’s iconic turquoise color?

Moraine Lake is fed by snowmelt and glacial runoff and typically reaches its peak blue color from mid-to-late June through early September. Outside this window, it’s often too low or frozen.

Why is Moraine Lake such a vivid shade of blue?

The lake’s striking color is due to “rock flour” – tiny glacial rock particles suspended in the water that refract blue-green wavelengths of light.

Can I drive my own car to Moraine Lake in summer?

No. Parks Canada prohibits private vehicles year-round. Access is limited to Park shuttles, public transport, commercial operators, biking, or walking.

What hiking trails start from Moraine Lake?

Rockpile Trail (~300 m, +24 m gain): Best for classic lake views.

Consolation Lakes (~3 km round-trip, +90 m): Peaceful walk to upper lakes.

Lakeshore Trail & Beyond: Leads to Eiffel Lake, Sentinel Pass, Larch Valley, Wenkchemna Pass—great for longer hikes and mountain scenery

Is there canoe or kayak rental at Moraine Lake?

Yes, you can rent canoes at the lakeshore (seasonal). It’s a popular way to enjoy the lake—check with local outfitters or the Moraine Lake Lodge desk.

Are there facilities at Moraine Lake lodge?

Moraine Lake Lodge offers restrooms, a café, and a gift shop—but services are seasonal and may require a brief walk from the parking area.

Can I stay overnight near Moraine Lake?
